The San Francisco Recreation and Park Department provides nearly 800,000 San Franciscans with essential opportunities to maintain healthy, active lifestyles. We maintain more than 200 neighborhood parks and playgrounds, and over 4,000 acres of recreational and open spaces. We care for more than 15 full-complex recreation centers and 44 clubhouses as well as the Marina Yacht Harbor, Candlestick Park, the San Francisco Zoo, and the Lake Merced Complex. The city's parkland includes 9 swimming pools, 6 golf courses, 151 tennis courts, 44 ball diamonds, 72 basketball courts, 35 community gardens, and 27 off-leash dog areas. Sharp Park in Pacifica and Camp Mather in the High Sierras provide San Franciscans with an essential escape from our urban environment.
All of these green spaces and facilities add immensely to the quality of life of all San Franciscans. We are dedicated to maintaining and improving these resources, but we need your help. Each year, we are faced with extensive budget cuts that threaten the essential programs San Franciscans rely on. Please consider the many opportunities to contribute, as described below. Your financial contributions are fully tax-deductible and will be earmarked for the program of your choice.

Golden Gate Park has been a beloved treasure for local residents and visitors alike for over 140 years. Due to the city's budget crisis, we are unable to maintain the level of care necessary to retain its standing as an exemplary urban park. We are approximately 200 gardeners short of what is needed and we have an operational and capital maintenance deficit of approximately 1.7 billion. The real world impact is that Golden Gate Park and its facilities are not as clean, green or well-maintained as they should be. A $10,000 gift will afford you with the opportunity to choose
your favorite spot in Golden Gate Park to maintain for a year. Depending on the location, adoption could include funding a gardener's salary; the purchase of trees, flowers and grass for Golden Gate Park's dells and meadows; the use of appropriate equipment to clean Golden Gate Park's lakes; or the purchase of materials necessary to repair playgrounds or ball fields. A tasteful sign will state that your family has adopted the particular location. Donation less than $10,000 will fund overall maintenance of Golden Gate Park.

We offer assistance to eligible San Francisco residents through our Recreation Scholarship Fund. Eligibility in our Scholarship Program entitles needy residents to at least a 50% discount and as much as 100% off program registration. Families can enroll by meeting income level restrictions or by submitting documentation of enrollment in other subsidized programs. Scholarships are offered to all of our programs, including Cultural Arts Programs; Community Service Programs such as Tiny Tots; Athletics Programs such as Girls Sports, and Leisure Services Programs such as Aquatics or Outdoor Recreation.
In 1988, the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department created a new citywide program in response to the growing trend of "Latchkey children" - urban children home alone during critical after-school hours. Today, the Latchkey Program continues to address this need as we provide supervised and structured recreation-based programming to approximately 1,300 children and young people ages 6-12 each year.
Major gifts make a significant impact on our ability to provide the highest quality programs and services. Please contact Nicole Avril to discuss the perfect way to match your wishes to the department's needs.
