Within its forty-nine square miles, San Francisco is a dense urban cityscape and an internationally recognized biodiversity hotspot, harboring a myriad of native and endemic species in its wildlife areas. These areas are located in both the national and city park systems and are part of the Golden Gate Biosphere Reserve, a unit of the United Nations’ world network of Biosphere Reserves. San Francisco Recreation and Parks manages 235 parks, 35 of which are designated as Significant Natural Areas and contain some of the most diverse wildlife in the city. They provide the perfect opportunity for San Franciscans to engage in wildlife experiences without leaving the city.
Gardening, habitat restoration, and other volunteer events are listed on the Volunteer Event Calendar. Click on a day to view event options, or peruse the month to see what catches your eye. Sign up for the event by registering on line, or email the contact person. Please note, adding an event to your calendar does not register you for an event. Have a volunteer project to advertize? The San Francisco Recreation and Park Department recognizes and welcomes the extraordinary value that volunteers bring to the public stewardship of our City's parks and recreation programs. Volunteer contributions are vital to the success of the Department's mission to maintain beautiful parks, provide enriching recreation activities, and preserve the well-being of our community. Volunteerism continues to grow each year and in FY 2009-2010 volunteers contributed approximately 129,703 hours of habitat restoration, gardening and recreation program support. San Francisco Recreation and Parks views the involvement of volunteers as essential to the vision, spirit, and quality of life in San Francisco. Not only do volunteers provide invaluable support, volunteers also bring new ideas, energy, and a community perspective to the decision-making process.
