COMING SOON: Renovations on Buchanan Street Mall
It’s time to CELEBRATE! For seven years, the Western Addition community has dreamed about what Buchanan Mall could become with the right vision and resources. Those dreams are coming true!

With our project partners, the SF Recreation and Parks Department has secured enough funding to begin Phase 1 construction of Buchanan Street Mall starting in early 2023, this will include:
• renovating three blocks
• improving all intersections of Buchanan Street Mall
Through SFRPD’s general funding, in-kind support from The Trust for Public Land, incoming development impact fees, and partnership funding from the SF Public Utilities Commission, design and construction of Phase 1 blocks is made possible by:
• Turk to Golden Gate (funded by Let’sPlaySF! program, 2020 Health & Recovery Bond, and Prop 68 – Statewide Parks Grant)
• Eddy to Turk (funded by Prop 68 – Statewide Parks Grant)
• McAllister to Fulton (funded by 2021 CA Budget – Senator Scott Weiner)
With support from District 5 Supervisor Dean Preston, City departments are working together to add new pedestrian safety and beautification measures at all four segmenting intersections of Buchanan Mall. The project team is coordinating with SF Public Works for new bulb outs at Turk and Golden Gate, with SFMTA for flashing beacons at all crosswalks, and with SFPUC for green infrastructure to improve stormwater drainage and reduce sewer flooding in the area.
If you haven’t yet given your input on Buchanan Mall’s new design, it’s not too late!
In February-March 2022, San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department, The Trust for Public Land, Citizen Film, and Green Streets are together soliciting input on the Eddy – Turk and McAllister – Fulton blocks through a survey and virtual community meeting.

Buchanan Street Mall Core Project Goals:
1. Safety, lighting, and beautification
2. Connect all blocks and unify the community
3. Tell the story of the community and the neighborhood
4. Social interaction and multi-generational recreation
5. Skills training and jobs creation
Key program elements on the Eddy – Turk Block include a sports court, a ramp for accessibility, and a children's play area. The project team is seeking input on the sports court, types of play equipment, and whether and where to include a BBQ or picnic gathering area.
Key program elements on the McAllister – Fulton block include a communal garden, a small stage with overhead shade structure and adjacent storage, a lawn for recreation and seating, and an arts plaza. The project team is seeking input on materials for the stage and garden areas, and whether the art plaza should be surrounded by planting areas or open to the Memory Walk—a connective space envisioned as an outdoor Afro-centric arts gallery.
