Bringing the vision plan to a buildable reality….
During the first quarter of 2022, the project team addressed code issues, structure, the intricacies of access throughout the multi-level plaza, researched durable exterior materials for the highly used area. Stay tuned for future developments!
What happened last year?
2021 marked a year of investigations, structural testing, materials studies and confirming the permit codes with Department of Building Inspections (DBI) and work on the pagoda with SF Planning Department. With the assistance and coordination with Japantown Garage managers and MTA, the design team comprised of Public Works, waterproofing specialists, structural engineers, historic preservationists and community leads, worked expeditiously to ‘ground truth’ the vision plan to make this project a reality.
An immediate improvement completed in 2021, was the replacement of the expansion joints along the east and west sides of the plaza. This improvement, implemented ahead of the plaza renovation, protects the building and lower levels from water intrusion and will remain throughout the plaza renovation..
