Construction Updates for Merced Heights Lower Lawn Area!

Capital Project Update

We are excited to report that, as of early June, the contractor’s certified consulting biologist has confirmed that bird nesting activity on site has been completed.  Thank you for your patience as we waited for the eggs to hatch and the baby birds to fledge from the nest!

This clearance has allowed the pace of construction to pick up at the park.

Here are some additional updates:

  1. We’re happy to report that we will be able to install 3 pieces of adult exercise equipment in the entry plaza. Thanks to those of you who weighed in some months back and provided your input on the options for equipment via our online survey. We have incorporated your feedback and the contractor has ordered the pieces, for installation just prior to project completion
  2. Sidewalk work along Shields has taken longer than anticipated due to scheduling difficulties and due to finding some utility conflicts. Most of the Shields sidewalk has now been poured and we are expecting inspections by early the week of July 4. Following clearance, the contractor will begin replacing the curb ramps at Shields and Byxbee (immediately adjacent to the park / clubhouse) and then move on to do some sidewalk work on Byxbee. We anticipate having a better schedule for this work as well as pedestrian circulation plan to share soon after the 4th of July holiday. These improvements are required to meet the City’s accessibility requirements. Thank you for your patience and please stay tuned!
  3. We are poised to work with tile artist Rachel Rodi to design, fabricate, and install a tile work mosaic piece on the wall above the entry plaza to recognize the contributions of some key community members. You can check out some beautiful installations from Rachel in other parks and open spaces in San Francisco, including West Portal Playground and Larsen Playground.  We’re still working to finalize the list of names and plans for the tile work. Please stay tuned for additional updates.

Thank you for your support of this project.  More updates coming soon!
