Merced Heights Playground Lower Lawn Terrace Construction Update

Capital Project Update

You may have noticed a pause in construction recently. Work stopped as we discovered some infrastructure below ground that we had not anticipated.

The landscape architect has issued updated direction to the contractor, who has been back on site and re-started work.

Site furnishings, such as benches, tables, trash can, drinking fountain, as well as adult exercise equipment, have all been received by the contractor, which is great news.  They will be ready to install once the site work is advanced.

Photos show new irrigation infrastructure in place, as well as members of the project team reviewing construction plans.

Staff will be presenting to the Rec and Park Commission Capital Committee on Wednesday, September 12, to ask for authority to exceed the 10% threshold for change orders for the construction contract and to extend the construction duration.

Many unforeseen site conditions have been encountered during demolition and construction. While all projects anticipate some unforeseen work, this project has seen even more than expected, including the following:

• Bird nesting

• Removal of unexpected concrete debris found underground

• Unknown underground utilities that required modifying sidewalk replacement work

• Underground drainage structure not captured in civil survey

• Slopes steeper than shown in survey, necessitating upsizing of concrete walls

The hearing starts at 2 pm. The agenda for the hearing will be available at the Recreation and Park Commission website ahead of the hearing. Click here to view that website and find the agenda, which will also include call in information. The hearing is held online, and members of the public are welcome to make public comment.

We are working to complete the project as soon as possible and anticipate opening the park to the public by February or early March 2023. Please stay tuned for more detailed updates as we have them.
