Interactive Theatrical Performance Returns to Golden Gate Park

Press Releases Posted on March 08, 2024

SAN FRANCISCO, CA – After selling out last year, the groundbreaking theater company We Players is bringing back their hit performance “Adventures with Alice” to Golden Gate Park this April, San Francisco Recreation and Park Department officials announced today.

The witty and whimsical production in which audience members follow performers through key locations in Golden Gate Park during the performance kicks off on April 24, and will run through June 2 for a total of 18 shows.

While strolling through the park along with performers, audience members will be immersed in the story and the scenery. The production leads the audience on a 1-mile exploration through the park to places such as Lindley Meadow, Hellman Hollow, JFK Drive, and Portals of the Past at Lloyd Lake.

The story is a mash-up of the books “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” and “Through the Looking Glass,” both written by Lewis Carroll. Audience members will enjoy seeing familiar characters such as Alice, the Mad Hatter, the White Hare, and the Red Queen, among others, as they jaunt through the iconic city park.

This year’s performance marks the company’s 13th collaboration with the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department and the company’s third residency in Golden Gate Park. Last year, a total of approximately 2,200 people experienced this unique performance.

“While the Golden Gate Park experience is already magical on its own, We Players takes it to a whole new level,” said SF Rec and Park General Manager Phil Ginsburg. “This joyful and interactive performance is unlike any other, intertwining the park’s natural beauty with innovative storytelling. I highly recommend everyone participate in this one-of-a-kind outdoor adventure.”

This year’s performance will see the return of San Francisco native Regina Léon, reprising her role as Alice. Back in 2021, Léon suffered a severe brain injury after falling from a fire escape. She made a full recovery and a triumphant return to her passion: acting.

“I'm hoping my story inspires others to return to their greatest loves, mine being performance. Recovery is strenuous, exhausting and sometimes feels impossible. Returning to the outdoor stage—to We [Players], specifically—was what kept me pushing through all the muck, all the darkness of recovery. This is cliche but there's always a light at the end of the tunnel even if it truly feels inconceivable. I thought I'd never get to act again but here I am,” Léon said.
