Tenderloin Rec Center Playground Project Moves Forward with Unanimous Approval!
We’re thrilled to announce that the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department Commission has unanimously approved the concept plan for the Tenderloin Rec Center Playground Improvement Project! Designed by BASE Landscape Architecture, this exciting project will transform the playground into a nature-based, multi-functional space that balances active play, nature exploration, and quiet retreat—all while prioritizing accessibility, safety, and community needs.
This milestone wouldn’t have been possible without the dedication and support of the Tenderloin community. A huge thank you to Wu Yee Children's Services, Up On Top, Low Income Investment Fund, RPD Staff, and the Tenderloin Community Benefit District for attending the meeting and advocating for this vital project. We also extend our gratitude to Supervisor Mahmood for providing a letter of support.
With approval secured, the design team is moving quickly to finalize construction documents, aiming to send the project out to bid this spring. Once complete, the Green Schoolyard Project will bring much-needed nature, play, and safe gathering spaces to the Tenderloin’s children and families, reinforcing the neighborhood’s commitment to equity and environmental justice.
Stay tuned for updates as we move closer to breaking ground on this transformative project!
