McLaren Park Trails | Construction update, May 2025

Rec Park Improvements | All Project Updates Posted on May 16, 2025

In late April and early May, our contractor completed trail work along the western portion of “Main,” wrapping up planned improvements to this major trail artery between the Upper Reservoir and Jerry Garcia Amphitheater.

You’ll notice that much of the western half of this trail is rimmed by logs or split rail fence. These trail boundaries were planned into the design to reduce off-trail biking and motor biking, which was damaging the park’s unique and valuable natural resources. As shown in the photos, “Main” wraps around an endemic grassland known as “Sidalcea Hill,” which is rich with California poppies, pink checkerbloom, and many other species of native forbs.

The staff of Rec and Park’s Natural Resources Division (NRD) play a major role in our trails projects. The contractor’s work to improve the trail and protect the hillside complements NRD’s everyday habitat heroics. In the photos below, you can see our NRD team weeding highly invasive Italian thistle.

Work will continue at the Upper Reservoir through May and into early June.
