Tenderloin Rec Center Play Area | Construction update, December 2025

Rec Park Improvements: Tenderloin Recreation Center Posted on December 03, 2025

Construction is well underway on the Tenderloin Recreation Center Children’s Play Area Improvements.

The project’s general contractor, Bauman Landscape and Construction, has completed most of the demolition work. This includes removing a large portion of the site’s asphalt and base rock to allow for a more permeable site that can better capture stormwater and support climate-resilience.

Much of the underground infrastructure upgrades, such as drainage and irrigation area improvements, are now complete.

The intricate, curvilinear layout for the new concrete work is now in place. Crews have also begun pouring perimeter curbs and seat walls that will define the play spaces and gathering areas.

The new playground equipment is scheduled to arrive later this month.

In the coming weeks, the contractor will begin shaping and installing the nature exploration elements that accent the new playground experience.

The SF Arts Commission has also transported the two art sculptures – “Dancing in the Sea of Milk” and “African King with Animal Power” – to be refurbished off-site. Once these sculptures are restored, they will return to the rec center and be placed in a new location near the front of the property where they will help frame the seating area.

While the playground is closed during construction, we encourage visitors to explore nearby alternatives. Father Alfred E. Boeddeker Park and Sergeant John Macaulay Park both offer great options for outdoor recreation until the Tenderloin Rec Center play area reopens.

Thank you for your support as we work to bring a revitalized, vibrant play space to the Tenderloin community.
