Thank you to everyone who has continued to follow and support the Randolph-Bright Mini Park project. We’re excited to share an important milestone as the project moves forward.

In early February, the project was presented to the Recreation and Park Department’s Capital Committee. The committee reviewed the final design and approved it to move forward, placing the project on the consent calendar for the Recreation and Park Commission later this month.

Randolph-Bright Mini Park Concept Presentation

The design reflects the community’s vision for a nature-forward, all-ages park. The design features open-ended play elements like natural wood logs and stumps, along with flexible spaces meant for informal play, gathering, and everyday neighborhood use, not just a traditional children’s playground.

We look forward to the upcoming Commission review and will continue to share updates as the project progresses toward construction.

Randolph-Bright Mini Park Children’s Play Improvements

Thank you to the community members who joined our design discussions and shared thoughtful feedback to help shape the final design for Randolph & Bright Mini Park. Your ideas and insights have been essential in guiding this project.

Over the past few months, our design team has been working to finalize a plan that reflects community priorities while remaining within the construction budget.

The team collaborated closely with a cost estimator to ensure the project is financially feasible and incorporated input from our Structural Maintenance Yard to include durable features that will stand the test of time. At the same time, our project partner has been hard at work fundraising to help round out the overall project budget.

The final design can be viewed here, and we are pleased to share that the project will be heard for concept approval at the Recreation and Park Commission’s Capital Committee on Wednesday, February 4, 2026.

The final design reflects many of the popular ideas shared during community engagement, including more green space, a wood obstacle course with a slide, and bistro tables.

Based on community input, the park will also feature improved accessibility, clear sightlines, open-ended play areas, natural log seating, flexible paved spaces, and shade trees. Overall, the space is envisioned as a welcoming, multi-use neighborhood park, perfect for gatherings, playdates, story time, and small community events.

Randolph and Bright Mini Park Children’s Play Improvements

Over the past few months, we connected with the community through in-person and virtual outreach, including a neighborhood cleanup day and an online meeting. More than 60 participants completed our questionnaire, providing valuable insight into community needs and priorities.

Popular design ideas included more green space, a wood obstacle course with a slide, and bistro tables. Based on community input, the design will also feature improved accessibility, clear site lines, open-ended play areas, natural log seating, flexible paved spaces, and shade trees. The space is envisioned as a welcoming, multi-use area for gatherings, playdates, story time, and small gatherings.

Next, the Public Works design team will compile feedback into a final design, followed by cost estimates and review by the structural maintenance yard and San Francisco Rec and Park Commission.

Thank you to everyone who completed the online design survey for Randolph Bright Mini Park!  The survey closed at the end of last week and we’re pleased to have received over 45 responses.

We also gained a lot of valuable feedback from our community outreach event on May 11. Neighbors at the event used our image boards that were on display to tell us how they currently use the park and to share their design preferences for new park elements. Thanks again to the OMI community for hosting a well-attended cleanup day!

From all the responses we’ve received, we noticed a few early trends. It appears that most of the children who play in the park are under six years old. This project will add new natural, wooden play structures for children – For these structures, respondents showed a preference for structures that help facilitate climbing and nature exploration. And of the options available for the park’s new play surface, most respondents preferred an artificial turf surface.

Some neighbors told us that they do not regularly use Randolph Bright right now, for a variety of reasons, but that they’re looking forward to using the park more once these improvements are complete.

We also were interested to learn that many respondents would like the perimeter fencing to enclose the entire the park – even though this wasn’t an option that we thought to offer on the survey or image boards.

We will explore these and other topics in greater detail at our next community meeting. A date for that community meeting has not been selected yet, but we will announce the details once they are set.

Our next step is to onboard a landscape architect from Public Works to lead the design. We’re excited to see how the architect uses this feedback from the community to create exciting, new design ideas for Randolph and Bright Mini Park!
