Construction work activities at Bernal Heights have been suspended through the duration of the Shelter in Place order. Fortunately, all trails are now open and while there is still some finishing work to do, we expect it to be wrapped up within a few weeks of when construction is permitted to restart.
We hope you enjoy the newly opened regraded area and trails on the eastern end of the park. Here are some photos.
Construction work on the Bernal Trails Project is ongoing and nearing completion. We expect to have all the newly restored trails open by early April.
The only trail that currently has a detour is on the eastern end where the completion of box steps and regrading work is taking place.

The entrance from Bernal Heights Blvd. on the east side is open and we hope you enjoy the new box steps.
Reopened this week is the north-south trail that connects the summit to the top of the new stairs above Esmeralda Ave.
The stairs at Esmeralda have been open for some time but we are leaving the orange fencing up for erosion control.
And the box steps installed across from Ellsworth Street have been holding up nicely.
Trail improvements southern trail (across from Ellsworth Street) have been completed with new box steps and seeding. The western trail (starting across from the Esmeralda Stairs) is nearing completion with the final run of stairs installed and box steps to follow. We expect to start the final improvement area on the eastern side in mid-January.

Restoration and construction work will occur in segments throughout Bernal Heights Park from September 2019 through early 2020. Individual trail segments will be closed during work. However, the overall trail network will remain mostly open and will continue to accommodate many recreation activities.
The first segment of trail to be closed while improvements are carried out at Bernal Heights is the trail that begins on the southern side of the park by Ellsworth Street. We expect this area to remain closed for the month of September.

Here is an overview of the work underway for this project:
Construction crews have removed loose debris from the park road from Bernal Heights Boulevard to the Folsom Street entrance and are installing split rail fence along erosion control areas. Next week work will begin at the eastern trail head where a bulb out will be created and box steps will enable safe access to this area of the park.
