We have hit some exciting milestones for the Gene Friend Rec Center Project!
On July 17, the Arts Commission Civic Design Review Committee approved the project to move forward from schematic design into design development, also known as Phase 2 of the three phases of design review. Two days later, the Arts Commission Visual Arts Committee approved our public art project plan. Pending Full Commission approval of the public art project plan, the Arts Commission will be publishing a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) for interested artists, and then hosting a pre-application workshop for interested artists. We will post and send out an update about the RFQ as more information is available.
Additionally, Rec and Park staff are requesting a variance from zoning code that will allow us to proceed without providing staff showers at the new facility. There are showers at the existing facility, but they are used for storage. Our intent in seeking this variance is to maximize public benefit for the very limited square footage of space available.
This variance hearing will be on August 23, 2023 and there will be an opportunity to make public comment:
Hearing Date: WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 23, 2023
Time: Not before 9:30 AM
Location: City Hall, 1 Dr. Carlton B. Goodlett Place, Room 408
and Remote Public Comment: https://sfplanning.org/remotecomment
Case Type: Variance
Hearing Body: Zoning Administrator
On August 2, 2023, we will be posting several physical notices for this meeting at Gene Friend Rec Center – The number of notices we post is based on noticing requirements.
We are excited to be officially launching into the construction documents phase of the project. We are still anticipating construction starting in early 2024. Please stay tuned for additional updates on the project schedule.
As always, please feel free to reach out to Project Manager Melinda Sullivan with any questions, concerns, or suggestions: Melinda.Sullivan@sfgov.org.
