Gene Friend Rec Center | Construction update, January 2024

Rec Park Improvements | All Project Updates Posted on January 11, 2024

Happy New Year, all!

We’re getting excited to break ground on the new Gene Friend Rec Center as soon as next month!

Here are some project updates:

  • Our project team has been coordinating closely with the project teams for the adjacent Folsom-Howard Streetscape Project and 6th Street Pedestrian Safety Project. Construction on a new curb bulb-out (curb extension for narrower street and wider sidewalk at intersection) at Folsom and 6th has started. This work is being completed prior to the rec center construction due to grant funding deadline.
  • We are proposing to remove one sidewalk tree on Harriet, in the location of the main entrance of the new rec center. Public Works Bureau of Urban Forestry (BUF) has posted a tree removal notice. BUF comment period is through February 8, 2024. For more information: Tree Removal Notifications | Public Works (sfpublicworks.org).
  • Proposals from the three artist finalists for a large art piece in the gymnasium have been submitted to the San Francisco Arts Commission. These proposals will be shared in physical form as well as online later this month or early next month. Community members will have two weeks to submit comments that will be considered by the selection panel.
  • We are working to finalize a date for a ceremonial groundbreaking.

Please stay tuned for more updates!
