San Francisco Recreation and Park Department (RPD) is kicking off the design process for the new children’s playground at Tenderloin Rec Center. BASE Landscape Architecture has been selected and funded by our project partners, Low Income Investment Fund (LIIF) and Wu Yee Children’s Services, through a Green Schoolyards grant, to reimage the playground. Our first step is collecting community feedback. We want to hear how you use the space and what you would like to see at the rec center.
On August 23, we had two bustling community outreach events! In the morning, our Children & Nature Division hosted a Preschool Nature Playday with Wu Yee and Glide. Children and teachers participated in nature sensory exploration, like apple tasting, flora exploration, the world of worms, and obstacle courses. In the evening, the center was filled with participants from Up On Top, SF Street Soccer, Boys and Girls Club, TLCBD, Glide, Friday Women’s & Children Group, Circus Center and neighbors. At both events groups shared ideas on how they use the space and what they’d like to see in the future playground.
We have also gained valuable insight from our stakeholder groups. We’ve toured the site and conducted meetings with Up On Top, Wu Yee Children Services, SF Street Soccer, TLCBD, RPD Program Staff and RPD Operations. Top priorities include maintaining clear site lines, keeping flexible blacktop space for play and events, and using durable equipment that will sustain heavy use and last for years. The children want to see climbing equipment, a tower with slide, a multi-user swing, and are excited about bringing natural materials to the Tenderloin.
We have extended our online questionnaire to open through Sunday, September 15. We would like your feedback! Please take a moment to share your thoughts here >>.
Feel free to reach out with any questions.
