Buchanan Street Mall | Panel Discussion on Black Public Art in SF + Paid Opportunities for Youth

Rec Park Improvements: Buchanan Street Mall Posted on February 12, 2025

We’re pleased to share two upcoming opportunities to participate in the development of the Memory Walk at Buchanan Street Mall:

1) Panel discussion on Black public art in San Francisco

Thursday, February 27, 5-7pm

at the African American Art and Culture Complex (AAACC) (762 Fulton Street)

Join legendary artists Dana King, Kristine Mays, and Malik Seneferu in a panel discussion moderated by Adrian Owens and Ebon Glenn. Convened by Trust for Public Land, this artist panel will discuss Black public art in San Francisco, as well as the art proposals currently being considered for the Memory Walk at Buchanan Street Mall.

2) Paid opportunities for young people (age 14–20) – Applications due by March 10!

The Memory Walk Art Advisory Committee (MWAC) is looking for young voices to help guide the art process for Buchanan Street Mall. Youth MWAC representatives are required to attend once-a-month meetings, March through June, and will receive a $150 stipend per meeting. Click here for more information >>

Feel free to reach out to Trust for Public Land with any questions: BayAreaParks4People@tpl.org

The Memory Walk at Buchanan Street Mall is envisioned as an Afro-centric art and history path that will connect all five blocks of the park, that will showcase the work of local artists and share stories of the neighborhood and local heroes.

Community leaders have come together to form the Memory Walk Art Advisory Committee (MWAC) to ensure that the artists and art chosen for the Buchanan Street Mall Memory Walk engages the community and aligns with the project’s vision, including fostering job creation and mentorship opportunities for emerging artists.

For any non-Memory Walk questions, please contact: Lauren Dietrich Chavez, Project Manager, lauren.chavez@sfgov.org, 628-652-6643.
