Great Park Naming Contest’s Top Five Names Announced

Press Releases Posted on April 07, 2025

SAN FRANCISCO, CA  After soliciting name suggestions and feedback from the public, five names have been selected to be presented to the Recreation and Park Commission, which will choose a name for San Francsico’s newest coastal park along the Upper Great Highway, the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department announced today.

Playland Parkway, Sunset Dunes, Great Parkway, Fog Line, and Plover Parkway are the final five names that will be discussed and possibly voted on during a special Recreation and Park Commission meeting on Wednesday, April 9 at 1 p.m.

Rec and Park received more than 3,900 responses to the online survey that ran between March 20 and April 2, in which the public was asked to choose three names out of 15 options and provide feedback based on criteria that included connection to nature, historical significance, community resonance, iconic placemaking, and appropriateness and clarity. The final names either received the most selections overall, or received the highest scores among the criteria.

The new 2-mile, approximately 50-acre park which stretches from Lincoln Way to Sloat Blvd. is set to open on Saturday, April 12 with a community celebration. Park amenities will include public art, lounge spaces with seating and hammocks, a skate space, a Nature Exploration Area for kids, a bike pump track, bike parking, and more.

A staff report is set to be published to the Recreation and Park Commission’s website on Monday, April 7 with more details on the naming process, ahead of the Wednesday special meeting.
