The Recreation and Park Commission has approved the construction contract, and we are working to get our contractor started as soon as possible.
We have posted “Construction Coming” advisories at the park.
Please stay tuned for updates as we have them on construction timing and groundbreaking info.
We recently received some community stakeholder questions about soil quality, irrigation, and drainage and so are sharing some information below. Please feel free to reach out to the Project Manager at Melinda.Sullivan@sfgov.org with any additional questions. We will be hosting another virtual community meeting in December to provide project updates and answer questions. Stay tuned for meeting information.
- The project design team has been working with a soils scientist who conducted extensive testing and prepared a report with recommendations for soil replacement and soil remediation. The team also prepared a soils management plan with specific strategies that apply to the many different zones of the site such as, how to remediate soil around existing trees to be preserved, future lawn soils, planting area soils, etc. Agricultural suitability and percolation (drainage) are both addressed in the project soils report and the soils management plans.
- The park lawn areas will receive new sod lawns. The sod is a mix of a few different species, each of which perform in different exposures, some are best for shade, some for direct sun.
- The entire irrigation system will be replaced with a new irrigation system.
- Currently the park is either flat or in some places concave which has resulted in poor drainage. The park will be regraded so that drainage is improved. The park will be raised in the center to "crown" and drain at 2 -3% positive drainage to perimeter shrub planting areas. In addition, the existing sub-drainage system will be refurbished to provide additional drainage.
