Would you rather splash in warm, clean indoor pools or bask in the great outdoors? You don’t have to choose at Bay View-this park includes a playground, softball field and spacious lawn in addition to a 75-square foot pool and a separate children’s wading pool. Swim classes are available.
This playground is named in honor of native basketball great K. C. Jones. In the presence of the community and other prominent basketball players including Nate Thurmond and longtime teammate Bill Russell, the playground was officially renamed in 2003.
K.C. Jones’ family moved to San Francisco from Texas in 1942 and he grew up in the nearby Double Rock Housing Development. He spent many afternoons after school playing football and baseball at this playground. He attended Commerce High School and the University of San Francisco, where he won two NCAA championships. He went on to win eight championships as a player with the Boston Celtics, as well as an additional two as a head coach with the team. He also won an Olympic gold medal and is one of only eight players to win an NCAA championship, NBA championship, and a gold medal. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1989.
