About this Facility
In 1996, the Recreation and Park Commission voted unanimously to rename Portola Playground and Recreation Center in honor of Sululagi Palega Jr., a Samoan American and local sports legend, who was tragically killed in Modesto two years earlier. Described as a "Gentle Giant," Palega grew up in the Portola District and was a regular visitor to the center, where he learned to play the sports that led him to be a local star at Balboa High School and later at City College of San Francisco. At the time of his death, Palega was in the process of being hired by the Recreation and Park Department as a director. He is remembered today as a community leader and icon for recreation in San Francisco and local sports.
Visit this thriving community center for a wide selection of games, sports, programs and classes, including after school activities for kids. Join a pickup game on the basketball court or soccer field, or take your frisky pup for a run. The large, inviting playground has climbing structures bordered by beautiful trees. Tennis courts, athletic fields and picnic areas are also available.
