Under a freeway is not the first thing you picture when you think about open space, but the SoMa Skate Park is a popular destination for city skateboarders.


The skate park was one of two new park spaces in the South of Market neighborhood to open as part of a renovation project in 2014, including a 7,000 sq. ft. dog park and the 72,000 sq. ft. skate park--- creating much needed park space in one of the most population-dense areas of the city. The parks, which are managed and maintained by Rec and Park, were part of a larger multi-agency improvement project on land previously occupied by the former Central Freeway structure. The project was completed in partnership with the Office of Economic and Workforce Development, the Board of Supervisors, Public Works, Real Estate, Arts Commission, Caltrans, SFMTA and the CTA (County Transportation Agency).
