On February 11, join the Bay Area Young Survivors and the Bay Area Ridge Trail in the trail's 9th annual Super Stroll and Roll, a free event to walk and ride through San Francisco's streets and trails. This year, the event will begin at the Stanyan / Page Street bocce courts and make its way to Golden Gate Park's upcoming memorial, the Bay Area Young Survivors Breast Cancer Memorial Garden. Come out for a stroll, explore some of Golden Gate Park's great trails, and learn more about this San Francisco-based non-profit and their vision to serve young people living with breast cancer and build the country's first memorial for those who have died of metastatic breast cancer.
The Breast Cancer Memorial Garden will be Golden Gate Park's first memorial since the AIDS Memorial Garden. BAYS is nearing the finish line in its fundraising and plans to break ground and complete the Memorial in 2024. Walkers and bikers will get a chance to see the drawings and plans to transform the space. In a time when a body feels battered by treatments for cancer, one of the most healing things can be a place of respite: a spot in the shade, sunlight dappling through, a bench with a view, or experiencing the tactile qualities of earth, rock, and leaf. Beyond the goals to educate around living with breast cancer at a young age and memorialize those lives that have been taken too soon, the organization is excited to ensure this is an accessible space for the entire community focused on healing, hope, and remembrance.
