Renovation of two Twin Peaks trails has begun! The trail at Noe Peak and the switchback just south of it will both be repaired and improved over the next several months. Both trails will be closed while under construction.
Since our last update at the end of May, our general contractor on this project, Cazadoro Construction, has mobilized their crew.
Since then, the crew has completed necessary survey work, brought in construction equipment, and installed fencing for our habitat protection zones and the contractor's staging area.
Prior to starting work, the crew received training from Rec & Park’s Natural Resources Division on how to protect Mission blue butterflies and their habitat during construction. Mission blue butterflies are listed as an endangered species by the federal government, and as such, they have special protections under the law. As part of our protocol to protect this special-status species, the contractor has erected protection fencing to isolate construction activity to a narrow corridor around the trail. These protections will help minimize any impacts to the butterflies and their host plants.
In the weeks to come, the crew will deconstruct the old timber steps along the trails. At some point soon, the contractor will bring in a crane to hoist bundles of materials for trail building onto the hillside. The duration of this crane work will be short and always overseen by flaggers.
We are also looking ahead to renovation work on other sections of the Twin Peaks trail network. In the next phase of work, the trail that connects Crestline Drive to Twin Peaks Boulevard (future Twin Peaks Promenade) will be restored. This work is funded but will follow under a separate construction contract.
We also are continuing to advance the construction document package for construction of the Twin Peaks Promenade, which will convert the closed roadway into a linear park. The project is currently being reviewed to assure compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), required of all projects that receive federal funds. The construction of the Twin Peaks Promenade is also fully funded and expected to open for construction bidding in early 2025.
Thank you for your ongoing support and we look forward to sharing more updates with you as the project progresses.
