Golden Gate Park - Bay Area Young Survivors (BAYS) Memorial Garden | Construction Begins!

Rec Park Improvements | All Project Updates Posted on August 28, 2024

This month, Rec and Park joined Bay Area Young Survivors (BAYS) to break ground on the BAYS Breast Cancer Memorial Garden in Golden Gate Park. Once complete, the revitalized garden area will serve as a space for reflection, honoring the many people who have lost their lives from breast cancer.

The memorial is set to be the nation’s first permanent public breast cancer memorial, and the first memorial to be erected in Golden Gate Park in 28 years, since the National AIDS Memorial became federally designated in 1996.

For the project, this area will get new landscaping, which includes plantings and pathways, along with new seating and signage. The actual memorial will be metal framing encircling the space, displaying the names of BAYS members who have been lost due to breast cancer.

A big thank you to BAYS for being the driving force behind this project, which will be the first permanent and public memorial for breast cancer in the U.S. Also, thanks for InsideOut Architecture and Treaty Construction. With construction getting underway, the memorial garden is anticipated to be completed in spring 2025.

Feel free to reach out with any questions.
