Bernal Heights Playground | Project update, April 2025

Rec Park Improvements: Bernal Heights Playground Renewal Posted on April 22, 2025

The San Francisco Recreation and Park Department is pleased to share the final design for the Bernal Heights playground. This design grew from the invaluable input of hundreds of community members via our design survey and in-person feedback sessions. Thank you for sharing your insights and helping to design a playground that best meets the needs of everyone in the community.

As part of our outreach, we sought feedback on the preferred look and feel of the playground equipment. Natural-looking options were the most popular, so the final design features equipment crafted from high-quality and durable Robinia wood.

We heard that you wanted a good variety of challenging equipment for kids of all ages. That’s why the design will feature classic playground essentials, such as monkey bars, a bridge, climbing elements, and a large slide.

We also heard that you wanted an inclusive and enjoyable experience for all age groups, so we have included several play components tailored for children aged 2-5, such as animal-inspired spring riders, baby and toddler swings, fully accessible merry-go-round, and village shop-themed playhouse. We’re also reconfiguring the entrance points to the sandbox to make this feature fully accessible and more open.

Another significant piece of feedback we received was the need for more shade at the playground. We’re very pleased to report that we’ve been able to include a shade structure on the west side of the playground, which will enhance comfort and usability for families and children.
