Hello Park Advocates, 

Wanted to give a quick update on this project. As mentioned in our last post, the contractor will be working on a few outstanding improvement items. This includes adding chains between all the new bollards, minor irrigation upgrades and some additional planting. Over the next two weeks, the contractor will also be upgrading a primary asphalt pathway which is being regraded so that it complies with current ADA codes.       

 Also, we are initiation a new contract to have a majority of the old lawn area spaces upgraded with new sod making the entire east end of the park new and fresh. This work is anticipated to start in the next two weeks. The contractor will have 20 days to complete this work.  

Finally, we are getting real close to getting all the permit approvals for the new FlyWheel Coffee Kiosk. We hope to have this facility opened in the next few weeks so that you can enjoy a cup of coffee and play a little bocce.

If you haven’t noticed yet, all the construction fencing has been removed on the project that the public should have full access to the east edge of the park. Over the next couple of weeks, you will most likely see small construction crews completing various outstanding construction elements. In addition to the various outstanding items, the department has decided to complete additional sod improvements in this area of the park. Starting in a few weeks, we will have a crew on site preparing all the existing lawn areas so that we can install new sod. We anticipate this work taking about a month once work begins.

The concession kiosk space is finalizing its final permit approval process. We hope to have this venue open in near term. In the interim, please feel free to try out the new bocce courts.

The installation of the Exploratorium Exhibits have been postponed due to COVID-19. Several of the exhibits are tactile in nature which prohibits there installation at this time. Once we have approval, we will move quickly to get them installed.

After a months long pause on our project, we have finally given the green light for the contractor to begin work again. Over the next 4-6 weeks you will the contractor wrapping up work in the Oak Woodland, Haight Street and Page Street entrances as well as putting the finishing touches on the renovated Kiosk/Restroom structure. The Exploratorium is still waiting in the wings to make final installation improvements to their interactive exhibits. Thank you for your patience over the last few months. Our current anticipated substantial completion date is tentatively scheduled for the end of June. Please reach out if you have any questions.

A quick update: The Department recently bid the construction contract for this renovation project and we will be awarding the contract this month.    The goal is to move into the construction phase of the project which is tentatively scheduled to start in  July 2019. The overall construction duration is anticipated to last seven months. In addition to the capital improvements, the Department has been working with the Exploratorium to install several temporary, interactive exhibits which will help provide a friendly and engaging experience for park visitors. Last, this project will be upgrading the existing restroom building at the end of Page Street into a concession, kiosk venue where park visitors and grab a cup of coffee or cold drink. Exciting steps ahead.
