We hope you are enjoying the recently renovated West Portal Playground! We have received some concerns about the functioning of the merry-go-round at the playground. Our contractor and subcontractors have visited the site to check the merry-go-round and will be revisiting the site in the near future to modify the playground surfacing underneath the merry-go-round, which we believe will allow the merry-go-round to spin more smoothly.

In other exciting news, we are expecting the installation of donor recognition tiles along the playground seat wall, to be completed next week, March 22-25.

The West Portal Playground (Children’s Play Area Only) was temporarily closed today (Thursday, December 3) for some work on the perimeter fencing.

The playground will re-open by 5 pm today.  Contractor staff will be on site on Friday, December 4; however, their work will not impact the playground so it will be open for use.

The West Portal Playground (Children’s Play Area Only) will be temporarily closed this week as we do some work on the perimeter fencing. Please consider using this alternative playground: Larsen Playground (850 Vicente St) 

The playground will be closed starting 7 am Thursday morning, December 3.  It will re-open by 4 pm and, if additional time needed to complete the work, will close again on Friday morning, December 4, at approximately 7 am through 3:30 pm or earlier.

The contractor has a few minor items remaining, including some work around the playground fencing. This may require closure of the children’s play area for 1-2 days, which we’re targeting for the last week in October. Thanks for your patience as parts coming from Canada and have taken longer than expected. We are doing everything we can to minimize that closure time and will keep you posted on the details.

The restored field, as well as the nature exploration area, picnic area, and clubhouse restrooms, are now open (as of September 17)!  The children’s play area will be opened to the public pending confirmation with public health officials (anticipated mid-October). 

Please note that a few final punch list items remain. The contractor is awaiting some parts and will be completing these in the coming weeks.

We are excited to report that the renovation of the West Portal Playground is nearing completion. Please stay tuned as we work to figure out what that means while we are still under Stay at Home public health directive. Here are some specifics:

• Playground safety surfacing installation complete (see photos!)
• New concrete path, site lighting, and nature exploration area nearing completion (see photos!)
• Plants arrived to site last week
• Work on the driveway and loading zone and entrance is in progress and concrete work will continue later this week

The playground is looking colorful, as the contractor has begun installing playground equipment! Once they complete playground equipment installation, they will be starting on the nature exploration area. Stay tuned for more updates.

Due to construction activities, including the need to get waterproofing work done as soon as possible, tennis court lighting is temporarily out of service. We are working to reinstate lighting as quickly as we can, anticipated sometime in November 2019.

We will be posting hard copy advisories at both court entrances tomorrow to notify park users of this.

Construction is moving along on West Portal Playground renovation. The contractor is finishing up with demolition work and preparing to pour the first concrete walls and complete waterproofing scope. The Rec and Park and Public Works team has been coordinating closely with the contractor and SFMTA staff to protect facilities below the playground. You may notice large tarp work, which is serving as temporary protection until the waterproofing is completed.

After a successful “Play Day” on Saturday, September 21, we are excited to report that construction will start on the playground renovation this coming week of September 30.  Rec and Park and Public Works project team members met with contractor staff on site this week to complete a pre-construction survey.
