Stern Grove Clubhouse

Extensive repairs to the historic Trocadero Clubhouse at Sigmund Stern Grove have been completed and we are now accepting reservations for events starting April 1, 2025.


The Trocadero Clubhouse is a San Francisco Designated Landmark. Built in 1892, it boasts a colorful history as a roadhouse at the turn of the 20th century, when it offered dancing and gambling at roulette tables. 

It is architecturally and historically significant as an example of Stick-Eastlake architectural style and as the city’s last intact example of a 19th Century roadhouse. It was renovated in 1986 due to extensive use and weathering.

Today, the Clubhouse may be reserved for weddings/receptions, family celebrations, and company functions. 

There is a six-hour minimum to reserve the Trocadero; either 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM or 5:00 PM to 11:00 PM.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

  • Capacity: Maximum 120 sit-down; 140 standing room only.
  • Additional fees may apply depending on event setup. 
  • Stern Grove Clubhouse is equipped with a caterer’s kitchen. This includes a prep counter, warming ovens, and a refrigerator. There is no stove or oven at this facility.
  • Important: All weekend evening rentals (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) require a security guard from 5 p.m. until half an hour past the event time. Depending on the size and scope of your event, a security guard may be required on other days as well.
  • If a security guard is required, the Permittee must obtain a California State Licensed and Insured/Bonded Security Firm/Company. A copy of the contract must be provided to the Permits and Reservations office six months prior to the event date.
  • A Performance Bond of $750 is required. The performance bond will be returned if the reserved area is left clean and undamaged following the event.

HOW TO RESERVE

To reserve this facility, please complete an online application. Reservations can be requested no less than 30 days in advance, and no more than one year in advance of your event date. Wedding requests at this site receive priority based on historical precedent.

Requests Received One Year in Advance: Should we receive more than one request for the same date and time, exactly one year in advance of when that date becomes available, our office will conduct a randomized lottery to determine who will receive the reservation. For example, if multiple applications are received on September 1, 2025 for a reservation on September 1, 2026, a lottery will be conducted. Only one request form can be entered into the randomized lottery, per event, per date.

RESTRICTED DATES

Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas, New Years Eve and New Years are not available for reservation. In addition, certain weekends over the summer are reserved in advance for the Stern Grove Music Festival.

VIEWINGS

Viewings are available by appointment only on Thursdays between 3:00 PM and 4:30 PM. Please contact RPDReservations@sfgov.org to arrange for an appointment.

PAYMENT

  • A 20% (non -refundable deposit) of the total Rental Fee is due five business days from the date the reservation was made.
  • Remaining Balance, Performance Bond and Staff Salary charges are due six months prior to the event date.
  • If request for reservation is between 30 days and six months prior to the event date, full payment and performance bond, security contract and staff salary charges are due five business days from the date the reservation was made.

Note: All fees are subject to change.

REFUNDS/CANCELLATIONS

  • Cancellations made more than three months in advance of the event date are entitled to a 50% refund of all Reservation and Hourly Rental Fees paid to date; plus a full refund of all Staffing Fees and Security Deposits paid to date.
  • Cancellations made less than three months in advance of the event will receive no refund of Reservation or Hourly Rental Fees paid to date. Staffing Fees and Security Deposit paid to date will be refunded. 
  • No refunds for cancellations less than 30 days in advance of the event reservation date.
  • Credit Card processing fees are non-refundable. Refunds must be processed back to the original method of payment. Cash/check payments will be refunded with a check.
