We hope everyone enjoyed the Cherry Blossom Festival this month! Since our last update at the end of March, our contractor is continuing to pour the concrete footings and waterproof the plaza.
Construction highlights include:
Plaza/Pagoda Work:
- Demolition of the entrance path against the west mall building
- Waterproofing the concrete slabs at East Mall near Post Street
- Concrete form work and pours around the pagoda planters and stepped seating planters
Garage Work:
- Relocation of utilities and preparation of the surface for new beams, including night work on May 1 and May 2.
- Scanning the pagoda footing in preparation for core sampling, which will begin within the next few months
- Adding new scaffolding to support the form work for new beams will be placed on both sides of the north drive aisles on both upper and lower garage levels (up to 34 parking spots)
Please note that the scaffolding under the pagoda in both upper and lower garage levels (approximately 60 parking spots) and vehicle ramp will remain in place through mid-2025. Drive cautiously and follow posted detours signs on both upper and lower levels. Please do not walk on the ramp between levels.
Access to and throughout Japan Center Malls and Garage:
- Access from Geary Boulevard: Use the Geary Boulevard parking garage to access both East Mall and West Mall.
- Access from Post Street: Use the new posted detours into East Mall adjacent to U.S. Bank and to West Malls through the middle of construction entrance.
- Sidewalk: Accessible pedestrian detour is open along the north side of Geary between Laguna to Buchanan Streets. For safety, follow all detours, stay within fenced pedestrian detour lane, and avoid walking in the bus lanes.
