Japantown Peace Plaza Renovation | Construction update, July 11, 2025

Rec Park Improvements: Japantown Peace Plaza Posted on July 11, 2025

This month, we’ve completed a substantial amount of work on the pagoda, coring, concrete pouring, new beams, and fiber wrapping. On the plaza, the Post St seating nook planter foundations layout and formwork take shape (see comparison to renderings). Waterproofing continues.

Other construction highlights include:

Plaza/Pagoda Work:

  • Saturday work continues intermittently, throughout July and August; there will be no weekend work on Aug 2-3. Enjoy the Nihonmachi Street Fair!
  • Fiber wrapping around the lower Pagoda columns, core drilling at Pagoda base and sleeve installation for steel tendons that run from roof to foundation
  • Concrete work for plaza planters and seating foundation
  • Waterproofing continues throughout the plaza targeting the area drains. There may be some odor from the material.

Garage Work: mostly day work throughout July.

  • Plumbing/Electrical layout and installation continues
  • For the Pagoda, core drilling proceeds through the foundation for future steel tendons. Scaffolding and shoring continue. Approximately 60 parking spots under pagoda, in both upper and lower garage levels, will be occupied and unavailable through late 2025. Drive cautiously and follow posted detours signs on both upper and lower levels. Please do not walk on the ramp between levels.

Access to and throughout Japan Center Malls and Garage:

  • Access from Geary Boulevard: Use the Geary Boulevard parking garage to access both East Mall and West Mall.
  • Access from Post Street: Use the new posted detours into East Mall adjacent to U.S. Bank and to West Malls through the middle of construction entrance.
  • Sidewalk: Accessible pedestrian detour is open along the north side of Geary between Laguna to Buchanan Streets. For safety, follow all detours, stay within fenced pedestrian detour lane, and avoid walking in the bus lanes.
