[ARCHIVED] Tenderloin Recreation Center Playground | Design Update, April 2025

Capital Project Update

The reimagining of the Tenderloin Rec Center Play Area is well underway. After receiving unanimous approval from the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department Commission, the design team has been hard at work finalizing construction documents. As of the end of March, those plans are complete and officially out for bid. The project is expected to be awarded to the lowest responsive bidder this June, marking a key milestone toward bringing a new, inclusive green space to the heart of the Tenderloin. Next steps include applying for a Department of Building Inspection (DBI) building permit.

This project is the result of a dynamic partnership between SF Recreation and Parks, Wu Yee Children’s Services, KABOOM!, Up On Top, local organizations, and community members. Together, they are reimagining the play area with a strong focus on nature and inclusivity. Informed by input from families, educators, and neighborhood groups, the new design will include:

  • Natural wood play structures
  • Open spaces for recreational programming
  • Quiet zones for relaxation
  • Improved soccer pitch with seating
  • Improved street separation and visibility
  • ADA improvements
  • Increased planting, trees and new irrigation

The final design was led by BASE Landscape Architecture, with input gathered from three community events and multiple stakeholder meetings, ensuring the new space reflects the needs and hopes of the Tenderloin community.

Construction is anticipated to begin mid-to-late summer, and we’re looking forward to creating a welcoming, vibrant play space for generations to come.

Stay tuned for updates and thank you to everyone who has helped bring this vision to life!
