Rec Park Improvements: McLaren Park - McLaren Park Trails

Posted on: June 11, 2025

[ARCHIVED] McLaren Park Trails | Construction update, May 2025

Capital Project Update

Our McLaren Trails contractor continues to make great progress on trail and natural features restoration work at the Upper Reservoir.

Over the last several weeks, they have finished grading work and installed new drainage and irrigation. They have poured concrete for the new ADA parking space, curb ramp, and plaza area between the parking lot. They’ve also installed the sloping Outdoor Recreational Access Route walkway down to the water level.

Our contractor also completed grading and placement of the new stabilized surface trail route from the plaza towards the crosswalk at Shelley Drive West on Philosopher’s Way. There is more asphalt demolition and restoration work ahead over the next several weeks, as well as work on the crosswalks. This will be followed by more irrigation system work and planting.

Down the hill from the parking lot, they've made considerable progress to remove an old asphalt ditch and build a series of check dams. This feature will slow rainwater and help it absorb into the hillside, which should reduce stormwater surges from spilling onto Shelley Drive North. It will also enhance habitat values and offer beautiful sights and sounds for those traveling along nearby trails.

We are also excited to announce that by the end of this week, our contractor will begin working in earnest on University Hill (please see the image below). Please note that the forested area between Louis Sutter Playground and the Mansell Courts will be closed. Adjacent trail routes colored in yellow will remain open, as will all nearby social trails. For your safety, please stay alert, stay out of fenced work areas, and follow all detour signs and directions from our contractor's flaggers.

Thanks to everyone for your patience and support as work continues to progress.
